90 YEARS RECOUNTED IN THE WORDS OF ITS PROTAGONISTS. ENTE VILLA CARLOTTA 1927-2017

An exhibition will trace the history of the Institution using images and documents selected from the archives of Villa Carlotta, as well as filmed interviews onVilla Carlotta’s protagonists. 

14 May 
Anniversary 

A 90th birthday cake will greet the members and friends of Villa Carlotta when they gather on the Camellia Terrace. This will also be an excellent opportunity for presenting the book containing research notes.

Belloni Zecchinelli archive 

Presentation of the Belloni Zecchinelli archive, a precious heritage for sharing with the community. This event celebrates two anniversaries: the centenary celebrations of Mariuccia Zecchinelli’s birth (1917 – 2011) and the ninetieth anniversary of Mario Belloni’s birth(1927 – 2004).

PLANTS AND MUSIC

Trees, lutherie and harmonious sounds: the contribution of plants to musical instruments  

This exhibition highlights the bond between the plant world and music, with particular reference to the trees and bushes used to craft the typical stringed instruments of the western musical tradition. Such plants are examined in detail, from their origin, to their ideal habitat, their preservation, taxonomy and importance in lutherie. 

In collaboration with the botanical Garden Lorenzo Rota in Bergamo.

Glass beads, good-luck charms and X-XX century precious exchange coins from Augusto and Giuliana Panini’s collection 

Glass beads have always been an essential element of jewellery and body ornamentation throughout the world. The history of their production and use represents a very ancient tradition of artistic and commercial importance. Particular attention is given to Venetian beads.

INTERWOVEN THREADS

Raffaella De Bortoli and Alessia Franchini 

The Lilà experimental workshop of hand weaving sets out to explore the infinite possibilities offered by textiles, principally by playing with colour. Using ancient wood looms, Lilà creates unique and inimitable artefacts from precious yarns such as wool, silk and cashmere.

In September the magical charm of Beethoven’s music awaits you on Lake Como. 
Be sure not to miss the 4 dates, when the young Como-born pianist of international fame, Christian Leotta, will perform the second part of the 32 piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven in the splendid marble room of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina.

HERBS AND VEGETABLE GARDENS

Botanical watercolour paintings by Silvana Rava

Slender stems swaying in the wind, scattered seeds, the transparency of petals, all of which is put down on paper, with the addition of a little colour, water, paintbrushes and the grace of those who love the humblest aspects of nature.  The artist puts the accent on the gifts of nature which nourish us, cure us or simply move us with their ethereal charm.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF FLOWERS, BETWEEN LAKESIDE AND MOUNTAIN SLOPES.

Wild plants and colours in the Erbario Fabani. 

An exceptional collection of over 3000 plates make up the Herbal compiled by Dr. Giuseppe Fabani of Como between 1907 and 1938, which is now preserved by the Fondazione Centro Studi Nicolò Rusca of Como. Each plate presents a detailed description containing scrupulously precise indications of the genus and species, the identifier, the date and place of collection (complete with characteristics of the soil), the flowering period and finally, the plant’s medicinal properties.

THEME VISIT

Theme trail in the park:  Monumental trees: a walk through the park to meet the patriarchs  

Come and discover the magnificent yet silent presences that gladden visitors with their silhouettes. Their foliage in different tones of green (and not only green!) and the most variegated shapes, the posture of their branches, their bark with its incredible textures and colours. This walk through the park leads us to discover the many secrets and curious facts surrounding trees.

COOKING WITH WILD HERBS

11 am 

After a walk through the ancient olive groves of Villa Carlotta to discover and spot edible wild herbs and plants, we will learn more about their therapeutic properties and how they can be used in cooking. You will be amazed by the hundreds of wild species of different flavours, colours and scents which may eaten raw or cooked in desserts, salad dressings, first courses and in umpteen other ways. With chocolate chef Stefano Franzi we will learn the secrets of pastry and cake making in which wild herbs also have a role to play.

RELATIONSHIPS AND PEOPLE

Activities, projects, relationships and people 

As part of an on-going collaboration between Villa Carlotta and Anffas, there will be an exposition of the hand crafted and decorative items made by the differently-abled guests, teachers and voluntary workers of the Grandola and Uniti day centres. All items, of unique quality and craftsmanship, are fruit of an attentive team work aimed at involving and qualifying differently-able people through artistic and manual activities.
