The beauty of the flowers announces the summer!
In this chamber Giovanni Battista Sommariva (1757-1826) is depicted together with his sons Emilio (1780- 1811) and Luigi (1792-1838), both officers in the French army, and his nephew Emilio Jr, whom we also see in a painting by Eliseo Sala and a plaster bust by Benedetto Cacciatori.
In 1818, Giovanni Battista Sommariva asked Antonio Canova to suggest a theme compatible with prevailing Neoclassical tastes and satisfy his own vainglory.
Canova suggested French painter Jean-Baptiste Wicar, a pupil of David renowned in Rome – where he resided – for his ability in depicting historical themes. The result is Virgil Reading Sixth Canto of The Aeneid, a canvas now on show in Villa Carlotta’s Sala Sommariva.
